Zoi TheFemcee
Bio/Info/etc...
If Toronto hip-hop is thirsting for realness, it looks like Zoi the Femcee is the perfect person to hydrate the city. Although new to the rap game, Zoi has been following hip-hop since her cousin Tommy Spitz introduced her to The Wu-Tang Clan when she was nine. “I bought Enter the Wu-Tang (36 chambers) album. My mom threw it out. So I bought it again.” Now, at only twenty-four years old, half of Wu-Tang is following her on Twitter and supporting her grind.

When looking at her employment history in the construction supply industry it’s clear that Zoi isn’t afraid to dominate in areas known to be led by men."I’m a straight up girl, I rock 5" heels and wear shiny lip-gloss. You should have seen the male workers faces when I would jump on a forklift to load them up or walk into a meeting with a client to talk about tools and supplies.” Now breaking into the male-dominated hip-hop scene, it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be long until she makes herself known through both respect and skill. Zoi also continues to gain inspiration from two of the strongest women in the music scene; her close friend Kim Davis and world renowned Lauryn Hill. "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and Live,Love,Learn by Kim Davis have both helped me in my life. It’s more than nodding your head to a beat, it’s something to relate to. I want my work to be able to help someone out there like these women’s projects helped me"

In June of 2008 Zoi was dealing with personal struggles and started to use poetry as an outlet. She shared her work with local rap artist O.G., who later coined her the “Femcee.” He realized just how deep her words were and suggested she start rapping them" I was writing down what I was feeling, what I was going through. The thought of putting it on a beat didn't even come to mind" It wasn’t until one day she was in the shower listening to instrumentals that words started to flow from her. “Depression is like a gift and a curse when you’re an artist. Some of my best verses were written when I hit that low” With this gift, and the willingness to share such personal hardship, Zoi the Femcee’s audience is sure to continue to grow.

On the surface Zoi may seem like the girly type, stepping onto the stage with a dress and heels, but she has managed not to make her image the forefront of her appeal, instead it’s her sound that’s undeniable. After only rapping for a short period of time, the comfort that she displays on stage is incredible. Zoi felt as though she never had hobbies growing up and performing has become the one thing that she truly has a passion for. Zoi the Femcee’s first performance was at ‘Roc da Mic’ in May 2009 which she now performs at routinely. She has also performed at Go Hard or Go Home, Socially Connected, and the Canadian Indie Music Showcase which she also helped host. In the last year alone she has had over 25 performances.

In September of 2010 Zoi the Femcee plans to drop her first mixtape titled ‘Branded.’ The title came from a previous idea to get a barcode tattoo. Zoi has felt pressure from people around her to create a “brand” for herself and the barcode works as a rebuttal; her brand is now herself. With such singles as “Tomorrow” that dive deep into the personal battles Zoi the Femcee has faced, it’s going to be hard for people to not pay attention.

HIP HOP HEADZ

THE CYPHER - Golden Era Edition

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=133132486719314&ref=ts

When: Weds. July 28, Doors @ 9pm

Where: Augusta House - 152 Augusta Ave.

Hip Hop exists in its fullest effect when the community that supports it comes together and unifies for a common cause. Hip Hop culture manifests through the creative self-expression of individuals who embody its spirit in their respective art-forms. This power of creative self-expression, the unification of a community for the great purpose that is Hip Hop, happens at The Cypher...

The Cypher is a grassroots hip hop event started by MC FÜBB, DJ Combo and the Hip Hop Headz (H3) community in downtown Toronto in the summer of 2009. The Cypher is an event where hip hop MCs, DJs, producers, and other artists from around the city come to meet and showcase their talents and skills, and gives them an opportunity to network and create business opportunities. The Cypher is an event designed to keep alive the spirit of spontaneous creativity and showmanship that can occur only in hip hop. The Cypher is an opportunity for various members of the hip hop community to perform, network, build community and have fun.

Artists sign up to take part in group performances called cyphers, in which each performer takes a few minutes on the mic and then passes it on to the next performer. All performances occur over music supplied by a live DJ, spinning hip hop instrumentals. Local producers also have an opportunity to have their music played at The Cypher and rapped over by the performing artists. There are also a few spots at The Cypher reserved for featured artists to perform their own sets.

This edition, we'll be playing tracks and instrumentals from the "Golden Era" of hip hop (disputably, '89-'96).

STARDANCE feat. FRANCO DE LEON (Chicago)

When: Thurs, June 24, 9pm
Where: Suba Lounge, 292 College Street

This event is strictly for the dance heads; we're calling out all the hip hoppers, b-boys, b-girls, housers, crumpers, jukers, poppers, lockers etc...

Stardance is a new monthly that unites all styles of music and dance under one common cause. This is THE event to come out and rock your style on the dance floor. Whether you're in a crew or solo, this is the time and place to bust out your skills and represent. The floor is open to whoever can rock it. Come and show off your style, network, learn, share and be part of a new community. We'll be playing everything under the sun just like the greats do it from hip hop, disco, funk, soul, electro, house, bmore + more.

We are also taking donations of canned food, clothing, toys, electronics, etc. to give to people in third world countries! So come out and enjoy great music, donate something to poor communities, get down and rock the night away.

Featruing special guest DJ Franco De Leon from Chicago!

In Chicago, Franco de Leon is a regular feature of the nightclub scene, with several select shows a month. He can be found at some of the highest profile venues, and/or simply the hippest places to be: from parties in the uber-hip Wicker Park Area, to Chicago nightlife staples like Wrigleyville’s Smart Bar, to the new, super posh, live venues, like The Shrine in the burgeoning South Loop. Besides his reputation as a pheonomenal DJ (impeccable blending technique, superb crowd reading, interesting and appealing track selection, as well as great stage presence), its also common to see de Leon playing live guitar over his mixes, remixing music on the fly, and breaking the barriers of genre. He has opened for international stars like DJ Qbert (the pioneer of turntablism, who has twice requested to play tag team sets with de Leon in the last eight months), Derrick Carter (a Chicago house legend), and Rhymefest (Grammy Award Winner).
